About
Eoin Cunningham is a Senior Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast (QUB), based in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Advanced Materials and Processing. His research focuses on sustainable materials, circular economy strategies, and bio-based alternatives to synthetic polymers. He holds a PhD in biomimetic bone scaffold development and has extensive post-doctoral experience in material processing and bioengineering.
Education: IMechE-accredited MEng in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (QUB 2000-2005), followed by a PhD (2005-2008) on biomimetic bone substitutes. He has led and contributed to multiple research projects, including EU-funded initiatives on agri-food waste valorization and sustainable packaging.
Research interests include waste-to-resource conversion, polymer composites, and environmental sustainability. Key projects include the EIT-funded 'Consumer and Manufacturing Driven Alternative Packaging Solutions from Agri-Food Waste Streams' and EPSRC's ACCEPT Transitions initiative.
Notable awards include Royal Academy of Engineering grants, a Stanford University entrepreneurship scholarship, and recognition for innovative biomaterials research. His work aligns with UN SDGs, particularly addressing responsible consumption and climate action.
Teaching responsibilities span undergraduate and graduate courses in product design engineering, mechanical engineering, and project supervision. He actively engages in public outreach, contributing to media discussions on sustainable plastics and circular economy solutions.
