Dr. Enrique García Riaza is a Professor in the Department of Historical Sciences and Theory of the Arts at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), specializing in Ancient History. He serves as Principal Investigator of the Civitas Research Group at UIB and is co-founder of the Occidens Interuniversity Research Group. His academic career includes significant administrative roles such as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, Deputy Director of the Center for Postgraduate Studies, and Vice-Rector of Research and Internationalization at UIB.
His educational background includes a Graduate degree in History specializing in Ancient History from the University of Salamanca (1991), 'Grado de Salamanca' (1992), and a PhD in History from the University of the Balearic Islands (1997). He has conducted further studies at University College London and has held research positions at prestigious institutions including Merton College, Oxford and New York University.
Dr. García Riaza's research focuses on diplomacy and the law of war during the Roman-Republican expansion, as well as the Ancient History of the Balearic Islands. His work examines diplomatic protocols, military coalitions, and the material culture of diplomacy in the ancient Mediterranean world, with particular attention to the Iberian Peninsula and its interactions with Rome. His research spans the transition from borders to provinces in the Western Mediterranean during the 3rd-1st centuries BC.
His current research projects include 'Environments for dialogue: the spaces of diplomacy at the Roman provincial level during the Republic (IANVA)', 'Projecte Guardis' funded by Consell de Mallorca, and 'ARQUEOMALLORNAUTA: excavation, recovery and enhancement project of the Ses Fontanelles shipwreck (Palma)'. He has held four consecutive six-year research grants and has been principal investigator on five consecutive R&D&I projects funded by the State Research Agency of the Spanish Government.
Dr. García Riaza has been actively involved in academic service as a member of the Advisory Board of Faventia Magazine, Editorial Board of 'Libera Res Pvblica' Collection, and Editorial Board of Mayurqa Magazine. He is also a member of the Spanish Chapter of the Club of Rome (Balearic Group) and the Libera Res Publica Network of Excellence.
As an educator, he teaches courses including Ancient History of Greece, Ancient History of Rome, and Ancient History of the Balearic Islands at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2013, he has been a member of the PhD Program in Prehistory and Ancient Sciences at the University of Salamanca.
