Dr. Enrique Cotelo is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish within the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Mississippi’s College of Liberal Arts. Since 2001, he has taught courses spanning Spanish language instruction and Latin American history, focusing on the interplay between dialects, cultural identities, and historical narratives.
- Education: B.A. in Music (University of Mississippi, 1985), Master of Music (University of Texas at Austin, 1988), M.A. in Modern Languages (University of Mississippi, 2011), Ph.D. in Latin American History (University of Mississippi, 2012).
His research examines Spanish, Portuguese, and fronterizo dialects in the River Plate region, exploring their role in shaping national identities and political loyalties. His dissertation, “Where States Ended and Nations Began,” analyzed borderlands dynamics between Brazil and Uruguay (1850–1880). Courses taught include SPAN 111, SPAN 211, SPAN 303, SPAN 304, HST 362, and HST 366.
