About
Endre Begby is a Professor of Philosophy and current Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University (SFU), where he also teaches in the Cognitive Science Program. His academic journey began with an M.A. from the University of Oslo followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh under John McDowell, supported by a Fulbright Fellowship. After postdoctoral work funded by the Norwegian Research Council, he joined SFU in 2012 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Full Professor in September 2023.
His research spans social epistemology, political epistemology, philosophy of language, and cognitive science, with particular focus on prejudice, belief formation in antagonistic environments, and the cognitive underpinnings of communication. His 2021 monograph Prejudice: A Study in Non-Ideal Epistemology (Oxford University Press) established him as a leading scholar in non-ideal epistemology, and his current SSHRC-funded project Belief Formation in Antagonistic Information Environments extends this work into political contexts. His publication record shows consistent output across top philosophy journals with increasing focus on real-world epistemic challenges like misinformation and polarization.
