Emma Ritchie is a Lecturer and Midwifery Unit Coordinator at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Edith Cowan University (ECU). She teaches courses including MIP1203, MIT2101, MIP2102, and MIP4210, focusing on midwifery principles, antenatal/postnatal care, and clinical practice. With 25 years of clinical experience in emergency nursing, palliative care, and midwifery across metropolitan and rural/remote Australian settings, her expertise spans holistic patient care and evidence-based practices.
Her research interests include birthing and dying care, physiological birth, and the implementation of best practices in midwifery. She is currently pursuing a PhD titled: "Transcendent moments in birthing and dying: A grounded theory study exploring the practices of midwives and palliative care nurses."
Emma is actively involved in professional networks such as the Western Australia Breastfeeding Stakeholder Network, ECU’s Simulation Innovation Team, and the Centre for Research in Aged Care. She advocates for midwives to practice to the full scope of their role and mentors students through ECU’s Academic Student Mentorship Program.
Her qualifications include a Post Graduate Diploma in Midwifery (Distinction) from Curtin University (2007) and a Bachelor of Nursing from ECU (1998). In 2023, she received the ECU School of Nursing and Midwifery Staff Excellence Award for her contributions to teaching and research.
