Emma R. Master

Emma R. Master serves as Professor at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, directing BioZone – Centre for Applied Bioscience and Bioengineering and leading the Bioproducts Research Lab.

Her research pioneers biocatalytic synthesis of bio-derived materials through enzyme engineering. By applying genomics and protein design to modify plant biopolymers (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignins), her lab develops resource-efficient processes that leverage biocatalyst specificity and programmability under mild reaction conditions. This work enables high-value material applications from renewable biomass while supporting circular economies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Professor Master actively recruits PhD and MASc students for projects in enzyme engineering and biocatalytic synthesis of bio-based materials.
