Emma Powell is a Senior Lecturer in Education at Newman University's Faculty of Education. She holds a BSc (Honours) in Primary Physical Education and Sport Studies (2004), an MA in Professional Enquiry (2011), and a PhD from the University of Leicester (2017). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as Newman University’s Research Ethics Link Tutor.
Her research focuses on increasing children’s physical activity through pedagogical interventions, particularly the SHARP Principles Model. She collaborates with institutions like the University of Strathclyde and the University of Exeter on projects involving cystic fibrosis and Scottish curriculum adaptations. Key grants include a £150,000 NIHR award for a family-focused physical activity intervention for children with cystic fibrosis.
Emma has supervised Lan Wong’s ongoing PhD on adapting physical education interventions. Her work spans over 15 publications and presentations, emphasizing mixed-methods approaches to assess intervention efficacy. She has also served as an External Examiner for Edge Hill University’s PGCE Physical Education course (2016–2020).
