Emma Chapman is a Senior Lecturer (part-time) in the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Chester, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds an MA in Clinical Counselling (Distinction) and a BA in History of Art and Philosophy from the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on maternal mental health, particularly the psychological impact of motherhood transitions, challenging pathologization through a critique of the medical model. She teaches on the MA Clinical Counselling program, covering humanistic counselling, trauma, and case management, while also supervising dissertations and facilitating personal development groups.
Her published work includes a 2019 study in Illness, Crisis & Loss, examining maternal ambivalence through qualitative interviews. A BACP-accredited counsellor, Emma maintains a private practice in Northwich, specializing in trauma-informed and social justice-oriented therapy. She is completing a PhD exploring systemic barriers to maternal well-being. Additional certifications include PGCE (University of Lancaster) and extensive training in CBT, ACT, and trauma therapies.
