Emma Aggar is an Academic Tutor at the University of Sunderland since 2019. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care from the University of Sunderland and an MA in Social Research Methods (Sociology) from Durham University. Her teaching responsibilities include leading modules such as SSC220 Medicalisation, Normality and the Body, and assisting in courses like SSC120 Dimensions of Health. She also supervises undergraduate Health and Social Care Dissertation students.
Research interests focus on gender inequality, particularly non-binary and transgender studies, identity and sexuality, and health behaviors. Her MA research explored the (In)visibility of non-binary identities in a two-gender society, analyzing essentialist/constructivist gender theories against medicalized notions. Currently, she collaborates with a human rights organization documenting the lived experiences of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) individuals globally, advocating for their rights.
