Dr. Emily Setty is an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences and the Sociology department. Her research focuses on young people's digital sexual cultures, online harms, and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). She explores how youth navigate consent, risk, and intimacy in digital contexts, emphasizing ethical responses through policy and education. She currently supervises PhD students researching topics like online pornography, parental sex education, age of consent legislation, and climate change policy.
As Programme Director for Criminology and MSc Dissertation Lead, Dr. Setty teaches modules on crime, technology, and research methods. She is a co-convenor of the Families and Lifecourse Research Group and a member of the Sex, Gender, and Sexualities Research Group at Surrey. Her work engages with organizations addressing sexual harms and digital ethics, advocating for rights-based approaches to youth sexual expression.
Dr. Setty’s publications analyze youth sexting culture, digital citizenship, and the sociocultural dimensions of online risks. She emphasizes post-digital sexual citizenship frameworks to address school-related sexual violence and harmful sexual behaviors. Her research bridges empirical evidence with practical interventions to foster safer digital spaces for young people.
