Emily Lavering serves as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Michigan-Flint and is a primary instructor for the SEA-PHAGES Phage Hunters course (CIT 100) during Fall 2025, teaching 22 undergraduate students across all class levels.
Her research focuses on bacteriophage genomics and evolutionary science through hands-on microbiology education. Within the Science Education Alliance program, she leads phage discovery initiatives using Arthrobacter globiformis as the host organism, emphasizing genomic analysis and evolutionary principles in undergraduate curricula.
Dr. Lavering actively participates in national SEA-PHAGES events including the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop (December 12-16, 2025) and the 2026 SEA Symposium (April 24-26, 2026), contributing to community resources like the Phage Discovery Guide and Annotation Forum.
