About
Dr. Emily Fischer is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU). Her research focuses on atmospheric chemistry, climate interactions, and the transport of reactive nitrogen and trace gases to remote environments. She leads projects studying wildfire impacts on air quality, climate, and nutrient cycles, supported by NOAA, NSF, NASA, and others. Fischer's work combines field measurements, satellite data, and modeling to address global environmental challenges.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, University of Washington, Seattle (2010)
- M.S. in Earth Sciences, University of New Hampshire, Durham (2005)
- B.S. in Atmospheric Science, University of British Columbia, Vancouver (2002)
Research Interests: Dr. Fischer investigates wildfire smoke chemistry, long-range pollutant transport, and the role of climate in atmospheric self-cleansing. Her group uses advanced instrumentation (e.g., ammonia QC-TILDAS) and collaborates on initiatives like the WE-CAN project and NASA FINESST grants. Key themes include PAN dynamics, agricultural ammonia emissions, and the impacts of oil and gas development on air quality.
Awards and Leadership: She has been honored as a NOAA Climate and Global Change Fellow and Harvard Center for the Environment Fellow. Fischer co-leads the PROGRESS mentoring program to support women in geosciences, emphasizing inclusive fieldwork practices and combating harassment.
Lab and Team: Her lab (ATS 206) employs state-of-the-art instruments and hosts a dynamic group of graduate students and postdocs. Current projects include the Fires to Farms initiative and the TRANS2AM ammonia study. Fischer advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to environmental science and policy.
