Emily Cooney

Emily Cooney, PhD, is an Assistant Professor Adjunct in Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. She specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with clinical and research experience spanning the US, UK, and New Zealand. Her roles include co-directing DBT teams for Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital’s Adult Intensive Outpatient Program and serving as a DBT trainer/adherence coder through Behavioral Tech and the Linehan Board of Certification.

• Clinical Focus: DBT for adults and adolescents, substance use disorders, self-harm, and anger-related issues
• Research Experience: Principal investigator on two DBT feasibility trials in New Zealand; research therapist under Dr. Marsha Linehan

Research Interests: Evaluating treatment outcomes, adapting DBT for diverse populations, family dynamics in therapy, and clinician well-being. Active in global DBT implementation and training programs.
