About
Dr. Emily Cannon is an Associate Professor of Nursing at Indiana State University's College of Health and Human Services, within the School of Nursing. Her career transition from French and art history to nursing was catalyzed by witnessing compassionate care during her father’s cancer treatment. She specializes in medical surgical nursing, infection control, emergency nursing, sepsis, forensic nursing, and holistic care. Her research explores autopsies, PTSD treatment, psychedelics, and compassion fatigue among healthcare providers. Prior to academia, she worked as a medical surgical nurse and Infection Control Nurse at Union Hospital.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning through simulations, real-world case studies, and peer collaboration. She integrates clinical expertise into courses on pharmacology, patient assessment, and medical research. As a faculty mentor in the Honors College, she guides students in research projects focusing on nutrition, mental health, infection prevention, and forensic nursing. Her current academic focus includes holistic nursing, addressing patients' physical, mental, and nutritional needs.
Cannon advocates for compassionate, patient-centered care and uses her frontline experience to combat burnout in healthcare. The School of Nursing's Learning Resource Center under her guidance offers advanced clinical simulations (e.g., IV procedures, lumbar punctures) to bridge classroom theory and practical skills. She emphasizes 'breadcrumbs' learning, encouraging students to independently problem-solve while developing into confident, ethical caregivers.
Her dedication reflects Indiana State's mission to prepare nurses who are leaders, advocates, and innovators in diverse healthcare settings. Visit Indiana State Nursing Programs for program details.
