Emily Allsopp

Emily Allsopp is a PhD Candidate in Hebrew and Old Testament Studies at the University of Edinburgh's School of Divinity, where she also serves as a Tutor. Her research focuses on the rhetorical function of female bodies, pregnancy, and birth in the Book of Isaiah, employing feminist and literary critical approaches. She teaches courses on Prophets and Oracles and The Bible in Literature. Emily holds an MTh in Biblical Studies (University of Edinburgh, 2019–2020) and a BA in Theology from the University of Nottingham (2013–2016).

Her research interests include prophetic texts (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea), sexual and maternal imagery, feminist criticism, and gendered violence in religious texts. Recent work includes analyzing the use of sexual and gendered violence in Ezekiel, and the cultural history of pregnancy in antiquity. She has presented at international conferences such as the Female Corporeality and Religion Conference (Leuven, 2023) and the EABS Summer Conference (Syracuse, 2023).

Emily is a member of the European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS) and is contributing to forthcoming publications, including a book chapter on 'Physical and Gendered Violence in Ezekiel' (Bloomsbury T&T Clark) and another on 'Meanings and Representations' in a volume on pregnancy and childbirth in antiquity (Bloomsbury).
