Emilee Rader

Emilee Rader is an Associate Professor in the Information School at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, part of the School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Information from the University of Michigan (2009).
Her research focuses on human-centered aspects of data privacy, usable privacy and security (UPSEC), and sociotechnical systems. Key themes include privacy norms, algorithmic transparency, and managing privacy as a collective resource. Rader’s work bridges technical systems and human behavior, emphasizing how users perceive and interact with data-driven technologies.
Recent publications address data privacy pluralistic ignorance, sensor data norms, and algorithmic inference risks. She co-edited a 2025 special issue on Personal Information Management (PIM) and chairs the 2026 CHI Privacy & Security subcommittee.
Awards include the IAPP SOUPS Privacy Award (2020) and a Best Paper Honorable Mention (2009). Rader’s work spans grants on privacy as a common-pool resource, mental models of security, and collaborative research in digital ethics.
Her lab explores interfaces for algorithmic transparency, privacy speculation mechanisms, and design strategies to empower users in data ecosystems.
