Emil Steiner is an Associate Professor of Journalism and coordinator of the Sports Communication & Media (Sports CaM) program at Rowan University. He also oversees the Esports Industry & Entertainment Experience certificate program. Steiner holds a Ph.D. in Media and Communication from Temple University and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on sports media, binge-watching behavior, audience studies, and the cultural dynamics of fandom. Prior to academia, he was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist at The Washington Post, where he co-founded The League, an NFL-focused platform. He has also contributed to BBC, CNN, Forbes, and NPR.
Steiner teaches courses like News Media Literacy, Sports Journalism, and the Sports CaM Senior Seminar. His 2023 book Binge TV: The Rise and Impact of the Viewing Revolution explores streaming culture, and his recent Forbes articles address streaming platform challenges and live sports' role in media ecosystems. His research has been translated into multiple languages and presented globally.
Steiner’s academic work bridges journalism, media innovation, and fan psychology. Current projects include studies on sports-talk radio’s cultural impact and the intersection of true crime narratives with sports storytelling. He actively advocates for media literacy and the evolving role of live sports in fragmented digital landscapes.
