About
Emery N. Brown is the Edward Hood Taplin Professor of Medical Engineering and Computational Neuroscience at MIT and the Warren M. Zapol Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He is also a practicing anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and affiliated with the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) at MIT.
Prof. Brown’s research bridges anesthesia, neuroscience, and statistics. His experimental work focuses on understanding how anesthetics act in the brain to induce general anesthesia, while his statistical research develops signal processing algorithms to analyze dynamic neuroscience processes. He has contributed to computational neuroscience and brain dynamics.
He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, and National Academy of Engineering. His scientific awards include prestigious honors such as the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award, Transformative Research Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, and multiple fellowships.
- NIH Director’s Pioneer Award
- NIH Director’s Transformative Research Award
- Jerome Sacks Award from the National Institute of Statistical Science
- American Society of Anesthesiologists Excellence in Research Award
- Guggenheim Fellowship in Applied Mathematics
His affiliations and contributions to interdisciplinary research, particularly through MIT’s IDSS and Harvard Medical School, highlight his leadership in integrating medicine and data science.
