Elliot Anderson is an Associate Professor in the Technology Art department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and currently serves as Chair of the Art Department and Director of the A4 Lab. His career bridges art and technology, focusing on creative nonfiction through Augmented Reality (AR) and interdisciplinary practices. Anderson holds a B.A. in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University and an M.A. in Art and Philosophy from San Francisco State University.
His research explores the use of AR on handheld devices to create immersive, location-based documentaries that reveal hidden histories. Notable projects include Silicon Monuments (2011), which examines tech pollution in Silicon Valley, and A LGBTQ Leather Memoir, an AR app documenting queer history in San Francisco's Ringold Alley. Anderson’s work has been exhibited globally, including at the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and the de Young Museum.
As inaugural director of the AMD-funded A4 Lab, Anderson aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and equity in access to advanced technologies. He has developed animation classes at UC Santa Cruz and promotes partnerships with Silicon Valley industries to support student internships and technological innovation in the arts.
