Elli Stern

Elli Stern is a Professor of Modern Jewish Intellectual and Cultural History at Yale University, affiliated with the Departments of Religious Studies and History. He previously held a Junior William Golding Fellowship in the Humanities at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on Jewish Studies, Religion and Modernity, and the intersection of Jewish thought with political movements like Zionism, Communism, and Capitalism.

His major works include The Genius: Elijah of Vilna and the Making of Modern Judaism (2012) and Jewish Materialism: The Intellectual Revolution of the 1870s (2018). He explores topics such as secularism, the Holocaust, and global right-wing movements in his teaching. Stern has served on the Council on Foreign Relations and advised the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

His academic advisory roles include membership on the Academic Advisory Board of the Center for Jewish History.
