Dr. Ellen Shapiro is a Professor and Chief of Pediatric Urology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Specializing in complex reconstructive surgeries for children, she combines clinical expertise with research into fetal prostate biology and genitourinary development. Her career includes pioneering roles as the first woman to complete the urology residency at Johns Hopkins, followed by leadership in academic pediatric urology since 1993.
Education: MD from University of Nebraska (1978), surgical training at Johns Hopkins, and fellowships in oncology and pediatric urology. Over 30 years of academic service, she has mentored nearly 100 urology residents and contributed to advancements in understanding prostatic growth regulation through molecular and cellular studies.
Research focuses on fetal prostate development mechanisms, including mesenchyme-epithelial interactions and growth factor expression. Publications span prostate and bladder cancer biology, with emphasis on androgen-dependent pathways and metabolic regulation in tumors.
