About
Ellen Chenoweth is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, based at the Sitka Campus. Her research focuses on marine biology, particularly the foraging ecology of large cetaceans, energetic modeling, and the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems. She is also deeply involved in advancing educational opportunities for Indigenous and rural communities through programs like the RASOR initiative and the Southeast Alaska Ocean Bowl Competition. Her work bridges ecological research with community engagement, emphasizing culturally relevant education and One Health principles.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Fisheries, University of Alaska Fairbanks (2018)
Research Interests: Ellen's research explores predator-prey dynamics, habitat use by marine megafauna, and ecosystem adaptation to environmental changes. She employs innovative methods such as 3D scanning for virtual necropsies and integrates indigenous knowledge with scientific methodologies. Her recent work examines the economic and ecological impacts of humpback whale depredation on salmon hatcheries and the behavioral adaptations of marine species to shifting ocean conditions.
Advising & Grants: As PI of the RASOR program, she collaborates with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska to support rural high school students in scientific research. She mentors undergraduates through UAF's BLaST program and leads grant-funded initiatives promoting community-based research.
Labs & Affiliations: She is affiliated with the University of Alaska Southeast and leads the UAS Whale Lab. Her work interfaces with organizations like the SEATOR Network to enhance interdisciplinary marine conservation efforts.
