About
Dr. Ella Cole is a Senior Researcher and Group Manager at the Sheldon Group within the University of Oxford's Department of Zoology. Her research focuses on understanding the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms shaping avian phenology, behavioral ecology, and cognitive adaptation in wild populations.
Her primary research investigates spatial variation in spring phenology of birds, insects, and trees, particularly in great and blue tits, to uncover how natural selection acts on phenotypic plasticity. She uses long-term breeding data and environmental monitoring to analyze spatial scales of reproductive timing and climate adaptation. She also explores cognitive processes in wild birds, developing automated devices to measure learning ability, as part of collaborations with researchers at the University of Ottawa and University College Cork.
Dr. Cole’s recent work highlights how ecological harshness impacts reproductive trade-offs, the role of social networks in shaping avian behavior, and continent-wide drivers of spatial synchrony in bird populations. Her findings underscore the importance of environmental and demographic factors in buffering populations against climate change.
In addition to her research, she co-supervises a DPhil student investigating developmental constraints on phenological adaptation and collaborates on projects analyzing acoustic datasets from wild songbird populations. Her work is featured in the Wytham Woods research series, showcasing innovative methods in ecological field studies.
