Elizabeth Wood

Elizabeth J. Wood is a Lecturer in the Department of History at Christopher Newport University (CNU). She teaches courses including Early American History, African American History, Gender and Sexuality in the American South, and Comparative Slavery. Her research focuses on southern free people of color between the American Revolution and Civil War, examining how they navigated freedom in a racist, patriarchal society.

Wood has over 25 years of teaching experience across middle school, high school, and college levels. At CNU, she contributes to the MAT Program, supervises teaching interns, and instructs graduate courses such as HIST 510: The American Historian as Teacher and HIST 570: Methods for Teaching Social Studies and Assessment.
