Elizabeth Shlala

Elizabeth Shlala is the Associate Dean for the Core Curriculum and Professor of the Practice at Boston College. She holds appointments in the History Department, International Studies, and Islamic Civilization and Societies Programs. Her research focuses on the Middle East, North Africa, and the Ottoman Empire, with a specialization in gender and imperial projects. She leads the Justice and the Common Good Living and Learning Community and teaches Geographies of Imperialism: History of Colonization. Dean Shlala earned her B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. in History from Georgetown University, and is currently pursuing a Certificate in Jesuit Studies.

Her research examines trans-imperial gender dynamics and colonial legacies, with fieldwork in Egypt, Italy, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. Recent work explores women’s roles in British-Ottoman imperial intersections. She has been recognized as a Fulbright-Hays DDRA fellow and contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives bridging history, international studies, and Islamic civilizations.
