Elizabeth R. Varon

Elizabeth R. Varon is the Langbourne M. Williams Professor of American History at the University of Virginia and serves as Associate Director of the John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History. Her academic career focuses on the American South, Civil War Era, Women's and Gender History, and Intellectual and Cultural History.

Dr. Varon earned her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1993 and her B.A. from Swarthmore College in 1985. Her scholarly contributions include multiple influential books that have reshaped understanding of the Civil War era, particularly examining contested meanings of historical events and overlooked narratives involving women's experiences.

Her research demonstrates consistent focus on the complex political dynamics leading to and following the Civil War, with special attention to how historical events are interpreted and reinterpreted over time.
