Elizabeth Mitchell Elder serves as a Hoover Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, following completion of her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley in August 2021. Her research program integrates political psychology with political economy to examine how social, informational, and economic contexts shape citizens' capacity for political engagement and participation.
Her scholarly focus encompasses:
- Contextual determinants of political participation
- Historical foundations of public trust in government
- Institutional legacies of company towns
- Long-term effects of economic dominance on governance
Dr. Elder is currently finalizing her book manuscript, Company Towns: Industry Power and the Historical Foundations of Public Mistrust, forthcoming from the University of Chicago Press. This work demonstrates how coal company control of local politics established patterns of government underperformance and citizen distrust that persisted long after the mining industry's decline, revealing enduring institutional legacies.
Her teaching expertise spans American politics, political behavior, and methodological approaches to research design, reflecting her interdisciplinary analytical framework that bridges historical analysis with contemporary political science theory.
