Elizabeth Hoover

Elizabeth Hoover is Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley. Her research examines food sovereignty, environmental justice, and environmental health in Native American communities, with particular focus on seed preservation, contamination impacts, and community-based research methodologies.

Education includes BA in Anthropology & Psychology from Williams College (2001), MA in Anthropology from Brown University (2003), and PhD in Anthropology from Brown University (2010). Postdoctoral training at Columbia University.

Research investigates tribal food systems, environmental reproductive justice, indigenous responses to contamination, and cultural revitalization through food and farming. Major projects include studies of Mohawk communities impacted by industrial pollution, seed sovereignty initiatives, and Standing Rock water protector camps. Authored award-winning book The River is in Us: Fighting Toxics in a Mohawk Community.

Honors include Julian Steward Award, Beatrice Medicine Award, Ford Foundation Fellowship, and multiple book awards. Teaches courses on environmental justice, indigenous studies, and research methods.
