Professor Elizabeth Hinton holds joint appointments in History, African American Studies, and Law at Yale University. Her award-winning scholarship examines the historical roots of mass incarceration, racial disparities in policing, and urban uprisings in post-1960s America.
Her publications include 'From the War on Poverty to the War on Crime' (Emerson Award winner) analyzing federal policies that enabled mass incarceration, and 'America on Fire' (RFK Award winner) documenting systemic police violence and Black resistance movements. She serves on the National Academies of Sciences Committee on Reducing Racial Inequalities in Criminal Justice.
