Elizabeth Baltes is the Chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and an Associate Professor of Art History at Coastal Carolina University. Her research bridges ancient and modern studies, focusing on sculpture, politics, and public space in the Greek world. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Duke University (2016), following degrees from Louisiana State University and specialized training in digital archaeology.
Her research explores how ancient statue landscapes reflected political identities, informed by digital reconstruction techniques. Recent work includes projects supported by the NEH, NEH Summer Stipend (2020), and grants from the American Philosophical Society and Loeb Classical Library Foundation.
Teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary methods, with students engaging in digital mapping and 3D reconstruction of ancient sites. She investigates both classical artifacts and modern public art, such as the Arthur Ashe monument in Richmond. Her book project examines Hellenistic portrait statues at Delphi and Delos.
Awards include the 2022 Loeb Fellowship and Franklin Research Grant. She actively integrates digital tools into pedagogy, fostering skills in archaeological visualization and cultural heritage preservation.
