About
Dr Elizabeth A. Hodson is a Lecturer in the Fine Art Critical Studies department within the School of Fine Art at The Glasgow School of Art, and serves as the PhD Coordinator for the School of Design. Her academic career bridges anthropology, art history, and contemporary art practice through interdisciplinary research and curation.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Aberdeen (2012), supervised by Professor Tim Ingold, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship (2013-2018) at the same institution with the European Research Council project 'Knowing From the Inside'.
Dr Hodson's research explores the interstices between contemporary art practice, anthropology, and art history, with a focus on drawing, materiality, interdisciplinarity, and the imagination. Her recent work delves into themes of skin and fur in performance art, water as borders with the non-human, loss, absence, and feminist and posthuman strategies of readdress.
Her publications from 2017 to 2024 demonstrate a consistent engagement with posthumanism, animal studies, and feminist theory, often through collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches. She frequently examines the material and conceptual boundaries between human and non-human, as seen in her work on water, fur, and the sublime.
Scientific awards and fellowships include:
- Arts and Humanities Research Council PhD Studentship
- Royal Anthropological Institute PhD Studentship
- European Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship
As PhD Coordinator for the School of Design, Dr Hodson oversees doctoral studies and supervises PGR students. She collaborates extensively with artist Emily Joy and founded the On Feminism reading group with Margaret Salmon. Her research has been supported by competitive grants from AHRC, RAI, and ERC.
She is an active curator, having organized exhibitions such as 'Class Matters' (2024) and 'Queereal Secretions' (2023) at the GSA's Annex Gallery, and has participated in international conferences and residencies exploring non-human relations and materiality.
