Professor · Vestibular Neuroscience
Birkbeck , University of LondonAbout
Professor Elisa Raffaella Ferrè is the Head of School at the School of Psychological Sciences, Science Central, Birkbeck University of London. She holds a PhD in Psychology from the Università degli Studi di Pavia (2012), followed by postdoctoral research at University College London. Her research focuses on vestibular neuroscience and the cognitive effects of gravity, particularly in non-terrestrial environments. She leads the Vestibular Neuroscience Laboratory and has pioneered studies on space cognition, supported by grants from the UK Research Councils and ESA.
- Education: BSc (2005), MSc (2007), and PhD (2012) in Psychology from Università degli Studi di Pavia.
- Professional Memberships: British Neuroscience Association, Experimental Psychology Society, ELGRA, UK SpaceLABS.
- Outreach: Projects like The Zero-Gravity Band and SPACE YOGA explore art-science intersections and public engagement in space neuroscience.
Her research highlights include demonstrating vestibular contributions to spatial encoding, perceptual gravity priors, and cognitive adaptations in low-gravity environments. Awards include the 2017 ELGRA Research Prize. She teaches modules in neuroscience and sensorimotor processes.
Current supervision includes Helene Grandchamp Des Raux and Maryam Haq. Collaborative grants span ESA, UK Space Agency, and international institutions.
