Elisa Alonso is a full Professor in the Department of Philology and Translation at the Faculty of Humanities, Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville, Spain. She teaches courses in Computer Science Applied to Translation, Applied Linguistics in Translation and Interpretation, Software and Website Translation, and supervises numerous final degree projects across various translation and interpretation programs.
Dr. Alonso received her degree in Translation and Interpretation from the University of Granada. She earned her DEA (Advanced Studies Diploma) within the interdisciplinary doctoral program "Literature and Communication" at the University of Seville, and completed her PhD in 2014 with International Mention and cum laude distinction in the program "Literature and Aesthetics in the Information Society." Her doctoral thesis was titled "Translation and Technology: Analysis of the Use and Perception of Wikipedia by Professional Translators," for which she received the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize 2014-2015 from the University of Seville.
Professor Alonso's research focuses on the interaction between humans and technological media within expert translation processes and communication. Her work explores how translators engage with digital tools, particularly machine translation systems and collaborative platforms like Wikipedia. She investigates the evolving role of translators in technology-mediated workflows, examining issues of productivity, autonomy, trust, and ethical considerations in the digital age of translation. Her research bridges translation studies with media studies, human-computer interaction, and cognitive science, creating a multidisciplinary approach to understanding contemporary translation practices.
Dr. Alonso has received significant recognition for her scholarly contributions, including the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize from the University of Seville and multiple tranches of the Teaching Excellence Mention (Docentia-A-UPO). She has secured research funding through various national, international, and regional projects, including participation in the IMPETUS project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) with £240,000. Her research has been published in leading journals such as Translation, Cognition & Behaviour, Perspectives, and JoSTrans.
As an educator, Professor Alonso has directed multiple teaching innovation projects focused on developing multilingual content on Wikipedia related to Flamenco women and women in science. She serves as an Erasmus mobility tutor and has conducted teaching exchanges at universities in Belgium, the UK, and Italy. She holds a Pedagogical Aptitude Certificate from the University of Seville and an Occupational Trainer certification from the Andalusian Regional Government.
Dr. Alonso is an active member of several professional networks including the European Society of Translation (EST), the Iberian Association of Translation and Interpreting Studies (AIETI), and the Spanish Association of Semiotics (AES). She serves as an expert evaluator for the European Commission's Horizon Europe program and the UK's Economic and Social Research Council.
