Elio Riboli

Professor Elio Riboli is the Chair in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London. He holds affiliations with the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research Unit (jointly with the Institute for Cancer Research) and the Centre for Translational Nutrition and Food Research. His leadership roles include Director of the School of Public Health (2006–present) and Director of the Trust Public Health Programme at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He is also co-Principal Investigator of the HELIOS study in Singapore and pioneered the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), involving over 500,000 participants.

Education: MD from the State University of Milan (1977), MPH from Milan (1980), MSc in Epidemiology from Harvard University (1982). He is a Registered Physician in the UK (General Medical Council, 2005).

Research focuses on cancer prevention, metabolic health, and lifestyle-related risk factors, with emphasis on diet, nutrition, and biomarkers. Key contributions include establishing population biobanks in Qatar and Singapore, and over 1,000 peer-reviewed publications on cancer epidemiology, including 700 EPIC-based studies. He serves on editorial boards for major journals and national/international health policy committees.

Notable achievements: Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy (2018), Imperial College Medal (2021), Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (HonFPH), and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). His work bridges epidemiology, public health, and translational research, emphasizing global collaborations and precision medicine initiatives like the HELIOS study.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research Unit and collaborates on large-scale cohort studies such as EPIC and HELIOS. His research integrates proteomics, metabolomics, and genetic data to identify cancer risk factors and biomarkers.
