Eli Epstein is Professor of Horn at New England Conservatory (NEC) and Boston Conservatory at Berklee. His division is College, Expanded Education, with departmental affiliations spanning Brass and Percussion; Chamber Music, Community Engagement and Professional Studies; and Prep Ensembles.
Epstein's research focuses on the physiological and psychological aspects of music performance, particularly horn pedagogy. His innovative approaches integrate scientific understanding with practical performance techniques, creating a holistic framework for musical development. He advocates for music as "a meaningful and uplifting force in society" through educational and community engagement initiatives.
His publications have significantly shaped contemporary horn pedagogy. The third edition of "Horn Playing from the Inside Out" (2016) incorporated MRI imaging from the Max Planck Institute and was celebrated as "the most physiologically correct book ever published on horn playing." His album "Orchestral Excerpts for Low Horn" (2014) received acclaim for its nuanced interpretations of standard repertoire.
