Eleanor Ter Horst

Eleanor Ter Horst is an Associate Professor and Chair of German, French, and Comparative Literature at the University of South Alabama, within the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literature. She earned her B.A. from Yale University (1987), M.A. (1992), and Ph.D. (1996) from the University of Michigan.

Her research spans Comparative Literature, focusing on 18th- to 20th-century French and German literature, with a strong emphasis on Gender and Sexuality Studies, Classical Reception, and Interdisciplinary Foreign Language Pedagogy. She explores intersections of classical traditions with modern narratives, violence in literature, and pedagogical innovation for sustainability.

Recent publications and presentations highlight her work on Kleist, Goethe, and contemporary transnational themes. She has received prestigious awards, including the 2012 North American Goethe Society Essay Prize and multiple Clarion University Faculty Development Grants, alongside fellowships from Mellon Foundation, DAAD, and Fulbright.
