University of Nebraska Medical CenterAbout
Eleanor G. Rogan is a Professor and Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Public Health, affiliated with the Department of Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health. She has been at UNMC since 1973 and also serves as an investigator at the Central States Center for Agricultural Health and Safety. Her career spans roles in the UNMC Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer, College of Pharmacy, and prior academic positions at Goucher College and Johns Hopkins University.
- Education:
- AB, Mount Holyoke College (1963)
- PhD, Johns Hopkins University (1968)
- Post-Doc, University of Tennessee (1969-71)
Research Interests: Dr. Rogan’s work focuses on carcinogen activation mechanisms, DNA adducts, and their correlation with oncogenic mutations. Her studies on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and estrogen metabolism have revealed how depurination leads to mutagenic apurinic sites in DNA, contributing to cancers like breast, ovarian, and prostate. She also explores links between estrogen-DNA adducts and Fuchs Eye Corneal Dystrophy, as well as agrichemical exposure in pediatric cancers.
Publications: Her recent work (2015-2017) spans cancer etiology, oxidative stress, and functional medicine approaches to risk reduction, with a focus on molecular mechanisms and chemoprevention strategies.
Labs & Affiliations: Dr. Rogan is associated with the Central States Center for Agricultural Health and Safety at UNMC. She previously held positions in the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases and the College of Pharmacy.
