Eleanor Brown

Eleanor Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Education and Social Justice at the University of York's Department of Education since 2013, with prior research experience at the University of Nottingham on multiple ESRC and HEFCE-funded projects. She leads the Centre for Research on Education and Social Justice (CRESJ) and maintains extensive international collaborations across Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Her educational background includes a BSc in Natural Sciences (Mathematics and Philosophy) from Durham University, a CELTA from Cambridge University, an MA in Diplomacy and International Relations, and an MA in Educational Research Methods from the University of Nottingham. She conducted doctoral research on transformative learning through NGOs in Spain and the UK.

Research focuses on critical approaches to global citizenship education, environmental justice, and decolonial knowledge systems. Her work challenges dominant development narratives through studies of Buen Vivir, indigenous knowledge, and alternative learning spaces. Recent projects examine interdisciplinary dialogue in sustainability research and international volunteering experiences.

Publications demonstrate consistent focus on bridging epistemological divides in environmental research, with recent work analyzing second-generation biofuel pathways in Brazil and methodological innovations for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Her scholarship connects educational theory with practical interventions in sustainability and social justice.

As doctoral supervisor, she mentors students on indigenous knowledge in higher education, neoliberalism's impact on academia, and values education. She has led British Academy-funded projects including STRIPES on knowledge co-production in Brazilian bio-refineries.
