Eike Grossmann is Professor of Japanese Cultural and Theatre History at the University of Hamburg's Asia-Africa Institute. His research focuses on Japanese performing arts and manuscript cultures.
Authored/edited volumes include Female Agency in Manuscript Cultures (2024) and A Companion to Nō and Kyōgen Theatre. Work examines material culture of Japanese theater, historical performance practices, and gender perspectives in manuscript production. Current projects analyze Edo-period performance notes and female scribal traditions.
Holds JSPS and Hakuhō fellowships. Affiliated with Waseda University's Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum and Hōsei University's Nogami Memorial Nō Theatre Research Institute. Teaches Japanese cultural history with emphasis on embodiment and ephemeral artifacts.
