Efim Zelmanov holds the Rita L. Atkinson Chair in Mathematics at the University of California San Diego. He earned his PhD from Novosibirsk State University in 1980 following his MS from the same institution in 1977. An eminent algebraist, his research focuses on structural properties of algebraic systems including profinite groups and Jordan algebras.
His distinguished career includes positions at Yale University (1995-2002), University of Chicago (1994-1995), and University of Wisconsin-Madison (1990-1994) before joining UCSD. Honors include mathematics' highest recognition, the Fields Medal, for his groundbreaking work on the restricted Burnside problem.
