About
Edwin Maas is an Associate Professor at Temple University's College of Public Health, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. He co-directs the Speech, Language and Brain Laboratory (SLAB Lab), focusing on speech production mechanisms and disorders across the lifespan.
- Education: PhD in Language and Communicative Disorders (San Diego State University/UC San Diego), MA in Neurolinguistics (University of Groningen), BA in Dutch Linguistics and Literature (University of Groningen)
His research addresses two central questions: (1) Characterizing speech disorders through perceptual speech error analysis, psycholinguistic studies, and neuropsychology; and (2) optimizing treatment via principles of motor learning. He combines theoretical investigations with clinical applications for conditions like aphasia, apraxia of speech, and phonological disorders.
Recent publications focus on childhood apraxia of speech interventions, neuroimaging of speech sound disorders, computational modeling of apraxia deficits, and differential diagnosis of motor speech disorders. His work bridges fundamental research on speech motor control with clinical translation.
Dr. Maas teaches courses in speech science, adult speech disorders, and motor speech disorder management at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
