About
Edwin Cey is an Associate Professor and Department Head in the Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment at the University of Calgary. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences (University of Waterloo, 2008), an M.Sc. in Earth Science (University of Waterloo, 1997), and a B.Eng. in Engineering (University of Saskatchewan, 1993). His research focuses on hydrologic processes in the shallow subsurface, including water and contaminant movement, preferential flow, frozen soils, microbial transport, and groundwater-surface water interactions. His work employs field, lab, and numerical techniques, with student projects addressing topics like salt leaching and snowmelt dynamics.
Dr. Cey has received numerous awards, including the Great Supervisor Award (2018), Early Career Teaching Excellence Award (2016), and multiple Department of Geoscience Teaching Excellence Awards (2012, 2015). His recent publications explore nitrate leaching in agricultural systems, groundwater recharge dynamics in cold regions, and electrical resistivity tomography applications in frozen environments. He advises students in environmental hydrology and collaborates on projects addressing microbial contamination in rural water wells and land-use impacts on groundwater quality.
His research also extends to One Health frameworks for waterborne pathogens and nitrate management in agricultural landscapes. Notable collaborations include studies on SAGD performance and salt-affected soil remediation. Media coverage includes investigations into bacterial contamination of surface water affecting groundwater quality.
