About
Dr. Edwin Baynes is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at Loughborough University, UK. His research focuses on fluvial geomorphology, bedrock erosion, and the impacts of extreme flood events on landscape evolution. He holds roles such as Undergraduate Admissions Tutor and is actively involved in professional organizations like the British Society for Geomorphology and the European Geosciences Union.
Baynes completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh (2011–2015) and held postdoctoral positions including a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship at CNRS/Université de Rennes 1 (2016–2018). His fieldwork has extensively explored Iceland's volcanic landscapes, particularly the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon system, where he pioneered studies on canyon formation via catastrophic floods.
Key research interests include knickpoint dynamics, sediment transport mechanisms, and the application of LiDAR and 3D printing in geomorphological analysis. He has received prestigious awards such as the Mike Kirkby Award (2023) and Dick Chorley Medal (2018). Current initiatives include leading the British Society for Geomorphology Annual Conference (2024) and supporting the NERC Resilient Flood Futures CDT.
Baynes’ work bridges Earth surface processes and planetary science, with notable contributions to understanding Martian channel systems. His publications span experimental fluvial modeling, bedrock river dynamics, and environmental policy related to microfibre pollution.
