About
Edward Witten is a renowned American mathematical physicist and professor at the School of Natural Sciences, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. He is celebrated for his foundational contributions to string theory and theoretical physics, including work on supersymmetry, knot theory, and quantum field theory. Witten holds a B.A. from Brandeis University (1971), and M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University (1974–1976). His career includes fellowships at Harvard University (1976–1980) and Princeton University (1980–1987) before joining the Institute for Advanced Study in 1987.
Witten’s research bridges mathematics and physics, notably in the Seiberg-Witten equations (with Nathan Seiberg) and advances in M-theory. He has been honored with the Fields Medal (1990) and Dirac Medal (1985), among others. His work explores unification of quantum mechanics with general relativity and has influenced areas like topology and cosmology.
