Edward Rhodes

Edward Rhodes is Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning, appointed in 2014. He holds a joint Adjunct Professorship in Geology at UCLA. His academic journey includes a DPhil from the University of Oxford (1990), postdoctoral research at Cambridge, and faculty positions at Royal Holloway, Manchester Metropolitan University, UCLA, and the University of Manchester. He directed Oxford's Luminescence Dating Laboratory (1998–2003) and was a fellow at the Australian National University.

Rhodes researches Quaternary geomorphology, tectonics, and sediment transport, with emphases on:

• Active tectonics and fault slip-rates using luminescence dating and geomorphology.
• Palaeoseismology to reconstruct earthquake histories in New Zealand, Kazakhstan, California, and Spain.
• Innovations in luminescence techniques (e.g., MET-IRSL) for sediment tracing and low-temperature thermochronology.

His publications focus on earthquake geology, luminescence methodology, and landscape evolution. Recent trends highlight slip-rate variability along faults, glacial sediment dating, and interdisciplinary approaches to tectonic hazards. Articles frequently integrate field data with chronometric tools to resolve deformation patterns across timescales.

Rhodes collaborates globally on projects like the Marlborough Fault Zone (New Zealand), Garlock/San Andreas faults (California), and Dzhungarian Fault (Kazakhstan). He leads investigations into sediment transport dynamics and mentors early-career researchers in geochronology. Current work explores fault interactions post-2016 Kaikōura earthquake and sediment-carbon sequestration linkages.
