Edward M. Schwarz, Ph.D., is the Burton Professor of Orthopaedics and Director of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He also holds joint professorships in Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology, Pathology, and Urology. His research focuses on inflammatory bone loss, orthopaedic drug therapies, and stem cell research, with a strong emphasis on translational imaging and novel treatments for osteomyelitis and prosthetic infections. Dr. Schwarz leads major NIH-funded initiatives, including the P50 CORT (Osteoimmunology of Bone Infection) and P30 Musculoskeletal Biology Center. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Orthopaedic Research and holds over 70 patents related to bone-targeted antibiotics and passive immunization strategies.
Education: PhD in Immunology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1993), MA (1990), and BS in Biology (1988). Key awards include the J.R. Neff Award and Kappa Delta Young Investigator Award. His work spans 150+ publications, with recent focuses on bisphosphonate-conjugated antibiotics, lymphatic imaging in arthritis, and antibody-based therapies for Staphylococcus aureus infections.
