Edward L. Davis

Edward L. Davis is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, specializing in medieval China (Han through Song dynasties) and broader themes of imperialism, environmental history, and gender studies. He holds a BA from Harvard University (1976), and MA/PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (1981, 1994). His research bridges Chinese religious practices, pre-modern imperialism, and comparative medieval studies with Europe. He currently teaches courses such as History 151, 161a, and graduate seminars on Chinese history. His notable works include *Society and the Supernatural in Song China* (2003) and co-editing *The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Chinese Culture* (2006). He is completing a revisionist study of Daoism and popular religion in late Han to Southern Song eras.
