Edward Funkhouser is a retired Lecturer in the Department of Communication at North Carolina State University (NC State), where he served for 40 years (1977–2017). Since retiring, he continues to teach part-time. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Organizational Behavior from Ohio University (1979), following degrees from James Madison University (B.S., 1968) and the University of Memphis (M.A., 1973).
- Administrative Roles: Associate Department Head (1991–1996), Assistant Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs (1996–2002), Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (2007–2010), and Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Studies (2013–2014).
- Contributions: Co-founded the North Carolina Reading Service (1983), a non-profit providing accessible media to visually impaired citizens, serving as its first President (1983–2000). His research focuses on communication technology, media accessibility, and organizational behavior.
Teaching & Outreach: Taught courses in communication media, public speaking, and public relations. Conducted leadership workshops for organizations like the NC Bar Association and IBM. Authored/co-authored influential articles and textbooks, including The Process: Understanding Communication Technology and the Media (2016).
Awards: Multiple teaching awards (including four Outstanding Teacher recognitions), First Year Student Advocate Award (2006), and CASE Photography Excellence Award (2017) for documenting Harrelson Hall’s demolition.
Community Engagement: Served on the University Faculty Senate (2010–2014), Athletics Council (2016–2019), and Alice Aycock Poe Center’s Marketing Committee. Maintains an extensive photo collection archived at NC State Libraries, documenting campus history.
