Edward Appiah

Edward Appiah is an Associate Professor of Design and Pedagogy at the Department of Communication Design, Faculty of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, where he serves as Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate Studies. His academic leadership includes prior roles as Head of Department (2014), Vice Dean of the Faculty of Art (2015–2017), and Hall Master for Independence Hall (2017–2021).

Professor Appiah's research centers on Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability, Technology in Design, and Design Pedagogy, driven by a commitment to socially responsive design that promotes equity and quality of life across Africa. As local Coordinator for the global Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS) network, he bridges academic theory with community-focused sustainable change initiatives.

He has trained over a dozen MPhil and PhD students and serves as an external examiner for postgraduate programmes across African universities. His consultancy includes leading three design projects in Ghana and South Africa, alongside frequent facilitation of sustainable design workshops throughout the continent.

Administratively, Professor Appiah has held significant governance roles including Faculty Examination Officer, Member of KNUST's Academic Board (2003–2006), and College Board member for the College of Art and Built Environment (2014–2017). He also mentors emerging faculty in Sustainable Design and contributes as a reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals.
