About
Edus Houston Warren, MD, PhD, is a Professor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington School of Medicine. He serves as Program Head of the Global Oncology Program and holds academic appointments in the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, and Clinical Research Division. His research focuses on cancer immunology, particularly T-cell therapies for kidney cancer and lymphomas in sub-Saharan Africa. He leads an international team in Uganda studying Kaposi sarcoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, breast, and lung cancers in low-resource settings.
- Education: AB in Applied Mathematics (Harvard College, 1982), PhD in Neurobiology (Harvard University, 1988), MD (Harvard Medical School, 1991), residency and fellowship in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Research Interests: Harnessing T-cell specificity for cancer therapy, immune-checkpoint inhibition, graft-vs-host/tumor effects, and pathogen-associated malignancies. He co-invented high-throughput sequencing for T/B-cell receptor analysis, aiding in understanding tumor-immune interactions. His lab develops therapies targeting 5T4 antigen in renal cell carcinoma and studies Burkitt lymphoma in African populations. Dr. Warren also works clinically as an attending physician at Fred Hutch and Seattle Children’s Hospital, treating blood cancers and managing transplant patients.
Recent work includes studies on tumor extracellular matrix barriers to immunotherapy, clonal T-cell expansions in kidney cancer, and global health initiatives to improve cancer care in low-income countries. He collaborates with institutions in Uganda to build research and clinical capacity.
